WATCH: RENOIR

onetwothreefourfivesix

Last week I finished uni a few days before my friends, so I put to use a few movie pass I received a couple of months ago for the fancy Palace Cinemas

Renoir tells the story of the triangular relationship between Pierre-Auguste Renoir, his last model, Andree Heuschling, and his son, film maker Jean Renoir, over the final years of the artist's life. I have a definite affinity for French films, biopics and Impressionist art, so there was never really much chance of my finding fault in Renoir. As it so happened, the film was also visually stunning, engaging and funny. This is one I can see myself watching again.

LIFE: THE DREAM

I'm on holidays at the moment and this is pretty much what my life looks like right now. I've been smashing my way through a bunch of books, catching up on magazines, taking the time to make and eat some really delicious food and I've started knitting. I'm making a scarf at the moment.

It's so nice to have some time to myself to relax - I worked really hard last semester at uni and it seems a bit bratty to post my results on the internet but suffice to say I did really well and I'm proud of my efforts which makes it even more satisfying to take a big mental and physical break from it all.

I read Quiet by Susan Cain when we were in Melbourne and it's honestly one of the best books I've read. If you're an introvert (and even if you're not), I highly recommend it. It was a really refreshing perspective on introversion and one you don't often hear - it definitely changed the way I see myself and has had an influence on the way I approach all sorts of situations in regard to my introversion.

I'm reading Jane Eyre at the moment and enjoying it a lot - it's hard to put down! Next on the list is Love In A Cold Climate, has anyone read it? I haven't read any Nancy Mitford before.

Aside from reading, I seem to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Yesterday I made banana bread and a batch of amazing oatmeal raisin muffins which I may even post the recipe for, they are that good. I bought a jar of almond, brazil nut and cashew spread which is SO GOOD with strawberry jam on rye or sourdough, and I'm starting to document my continued experimentation with oatmeal on my Instagram alongside the rest of my adventures.

Is anyone else on holiday? How are you spending your break? If not, I'm sorry for the obnoxious I'M ON HOLIDAY AND YOU'RE NOT tone you must be getting from reading this.

Thought it was about time for another Instagram post. As is evident in these photos,  I've been going through books like nobody's business lately. I really loved The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery, Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert, How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut. All highly recommended.

I finished A Spy in the House of Love by Anais Nin this morning. I really liked the concept but I had to make myself finish it and I was left feeling a bit flat. So next I'll be going with something I know I'll enjoy; I still have an Austen and a Dickens, and a Coco Chanel biography, from my birthday so it will more than likely end up being one of those. What have you been reading lately?

I went to Flume and Chet Faker last night at Riverstage, which was incredible. It was an amazing show, I'm so glad I went. The lighting and visual effects during Flume's set was mindblowing. The two of them did some stuff together at the end as well, and I'm hoping that some of their collaborative work gets properly released soon! The only downside was that it was an all-ages show, and the multitude of twelve-year-olds made it feel a bit like a grade eight social. And everyone around me was talking through Chet Faker's set! Big boo to that because his voice is like something-out-of-this-world live. Little kids stink.

I'm going to Matt & Kim on Thursday, and Jeremy Neale on Friday so I'm going to be very sleepy by the end of the week, but, hey, it's worth it for live music, right?

INSPIRE: STACKS OF WORDS

My magazine obsession has been well documented on this blog, so it's probably no surprise when I say that I have a difficult time storing my collection. My parents get really annoyed at my refusal to throw out any of my magazines, but I honestly couldn't. I love the feeling of the pages between my fingers. I love going back and reading old issues. I love how magazines record a time and feeling and I love recapturing that spark of inspiration each time I revisit. It's said that print is dying, but I think they'll always be a market for it because there is just something about holding and carrying and reading your very own copy of your favourite magazine.

I like to keep (some of) my magazines where I can see them, and that translates to their being stacked up on top of my bookshelf, spines out, with a couple of select trinkets perched on top. Russh is the biggest contributor to this pile, as the 'cool' magazine that's been with me the longest, as well as being a particular favourite (Fun Fact: I took my Russh with me to grade eight camp and people in my class laughed at me because it had 'naked people' in it. It's called fashun). But Lula, Oyster, Yen and INDIE have become regular-ish purchases, alongside sneaky finds that creep into my collection when I've got a bit of spare cash.

I like keeping some of my coffee table books stacked as well. I don't really have room to put them out, but they're so pretty that it would be a shame to not show them off.

How do you store magazines? I have plenty more where these come from so ideas will make me a happy gal indeed!

LIFE: ENTERTAINMENT

went to Mooloolaba for a long weekend

went shopping while on holiday

loving shift dresses for uni

just finished an assignment on The Sartorialist

been listening to lots of music and reading lots of books

fro-yo before uni with friends

smoothies before 8 am lectures

post-gym treats

Hey pals!

I've been stupidly busy with uni lately, but luckily this long weekend I've got a bit of time to post/queue a couple of things, so yippee for that! But I decided that a little 'life update' by way of Instagram might be a good interlude.

I think the last time I posted was just before I went to Mooloolaba for the weekend! The weather was absolutely divine, and I spent the weekend shopping up a storm and stuffing my face with mocha frappucinos and frozen yoghurt. Funny story, though, we were actually up there watching my dad compete in a triathlon, and on the Sunday morning while my mum and I were watching, I fainted! It was so embarrassing, they took me to the medical tent and I spent the rest of the day holed up in our apartment watching Gossip Girl and reading Persuasion, for fear someone would recognise me as 'the girl that fainted.'

I'm well and truly back in the swing of things at uni now, and I'm really enjoying three of my four subjects, so that's not a bad ratio. I just finished an assignment on globalisation/media convergence/all that jazz last night and I chose to focus on Scott Schuman, so that was really interesting.

Aside from uni, I've decided to train for a 10 km fun run in August, so I've also been running, riding and going to the gym. I like to exercise anyway, but I'm really excited because I absolutely LOVE to run so it's nice to have a goal.

I also turned nineteen, which is way too old for my liking, but I figure cake and presents make up for turning a year older.

I hope everyone is well and massive congratulations if you got through all that babble.

Fallen in love with James Blake

Hello friends!

How is everyone? I'm having a lovely lazy day today. Slept in a little, went to the gym, had delicious Peanut Butter Cookie Baked Oatmeal for breakfast, did my French homework... and I've just spent a couple of hours reading and listening to music. Heaven. I love weekends.

At the moment I'm reading 'On Beauty' by Zadie Smith. Has anyone read any of her books? I'm really enjoying it so far - it's one of those books you really don't want to put down. I also recently finished 'Jack's Book: An Oral Biography of Jack Kerouac', which I also really liked. Having read 'On The Road' a month or so ago, and visited San Francisco and other parts of America last year, it was nice to be able to put things in context. If you're at all into Beat literature or poetry, I highly recommend it! What have you guys been reading lately?

I've also been digging through my parent's old records and having a fiddle with them on our record player. I love records - there is something so tactile about them that makes listening to music on them a more complete experience than pushing a button on a keyboard.

In saying that, I want you all to push a button on your keyboard and listen to this song. I heard it on the radio yesterday and thought to myself 'what is this amazing-ness!?' I've been listening to James Blake for the last few hours while I'm reading and I can't get over his voice. Wonderful.

I hope you're having an amazing weekend!

EAT: LET'S GO

I'M CURRENTLY DYING OF EXCITEMENT BECAUSE MATT & KIM HAVE ANNOUNCED THEIR SIDESHOWS FOR GROOVIN' THE MOO FESTIVAL AND THEY'RE COMING TO BRISBANE AND I AM GOING TO GO AND I'M SO ECSTATIC!

I love Matt & Kim!

I went out for breakfast on Monday morning with my university friend Cami, to Harvey's on James Street in Fortitude Valley. After a week cooped up with sore teeth and a pretty bland diet, I couldn't resist the ricotta-buttermilk pikelets with caramelised banana and honeycomb butter - doesn't the sound of it just make your mouth water? I can assure you that it tasted even better than it sounds. Cami added smoked bacon to hers, which definitely looked equally amazing!

After a delicious breakfast, we hit up the cinema and saw The Impossible, which is the true story of a family caught in the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, starring Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor. It was a fantastic movie, not the sort of thing I'd usually go for, but I'm glad I saw it. Definitely confronting at times (I'm terrible with blood!) and very sad (I was sobbing most of the way through) but overall a really good job, in my opinion. So, it's definitely a movie I recommend!

My exciting news is that a week or two a go, I finally got my license. It's great to finally be able to drive myself around and I'm relishing in the fact that I can go anywhere I want at any time.

Hope you're all having a wonderful week!

OUTFIT: ABOVE THE WATER

dress - cotton on
bag - mulberry
boots - topshop

I've been thrashing this outfit lately. I talked earlier about my growing appreciation for simple shapes and neutral colours, and I guess this outfit is another example of that. I've never really been one for denim but lately I've started to understand the appeal of a well-cut pair of blue or black jeans, or, a chambray shirt or dress. This dress is so comfortable and flattering, easy to chuck on with whatever shoes/bags/accessories/cover-ups I throw at it.

This past week or so, I've been keeping the supporting cast fairly simple. I bought these beautiful Topshop Adonis boots on a bit of a whim in New York. They were quite expensive and I wore them very little throughout winter, but I've finally realised their potential and they've become a fairly permanent fixture in my daily outfits lately. I have always been a little afraid of ankle boots because I worry that they tend to make my legs look a little short and chunky, but the neutral colour and decent heel, I think, make these more flattering. The cut out detail is, on a practical note, great for wearing with bare legs in summer because it means my feet don't get so horribly hot and uncomfortable, and they also work well with socks or tights underneath in winter. And on a less practical note, the cut-outs look suuUUuuUUuuUUuuper cool.

What have you guys been up to lately? Yesterday was Australia Day and all I did was listen to the triple j Hottest 100. I have no national pride. Although I did hit the town with my friends last night and I am quite tired now! I am getting my wisdom teeth out on Tuesday, so you can probably expect to see me around a little more this week as I wallow in self pity and self medicate with plenty of ice cream and internet.

On that note, I was wondering if anyone had any feedback/ideas/preferences for my posting. I guess at the moment, my main blog post 'subjects' tend to be outfit posts, music playlists, inspiration or style icon posts, or bits and bobs from my life (mostly revolving around food or magazines). I would really like to know what you enjoy most or perhaps find a little dull. And any ideas would be appreciated too! Just to keep things fresh and fun :-)

Have a lovely week!

Hello!

It's been a while since I've done an Instagram post, so I thought I'd do another one to mix it up a little. I'll have to do them more often - there were way too many photos. I think it's nice to share bits and bobs from life on Instagram. I like to scroll through my Instagram feed each night before I go to sleep - it's become a sort of ritual.

You can follow me @elizabuzacott - please do! I have, like, two followers. It's kind of embarrassing.

PS: I do have an outfit post coming, I promise. I just need to finish trying to fix the lighting as it's not nice at all. I will make these photos usable *insert determined face*

PPS: I usually take my 'post titles' from songs, so I thought I'd link to them at the bottom of each post - a 'song of the day' sort of thing!
